If the American founders were alive today, they would be worried. They would say that the current government has forgotten its job. They would say it is using fear, power, and loyalty tests instead of fairness and law. They would warn that when a government decides who deserves rights and who does not, it is no longer serving the people. They would say this is exactly the kind of problem they wrote about long ago.
The Declaration of Independence — Simple Modern English
When people can no longer live under a government that treats them unfairly, they have the right to separate from it. If they do this, they should explain their reasons.
We believe these truths are clear:
All people are born equal. Everyone has rights that cannot be taken away. These rights belong to all people—not just citizens, not just loyal supporters, and not just people the government agrees with. These rights include the right to live, the right to be free, and the right to try to build a good and meaningful life.
Governments are created to protect these rights for everyone. They get their power from the people they govern. When a government stops protecting these rights, or only protects them for some people, the people have the right to change that government or replace it with a new one that will better protect life, freedom, and fairness for all.
