Quiet Camping Standard – Inverter Generators Only
To preserve the natural soundscape and ensure a peaceful experience for all guests, the use of open-frame (“contractor-style”) generators is prohibited within the campground at all times.
Permitted Equipment
Only fully enclosed inverter generators that operate at or below 60 dBA measured at 23 feet (7 meters) are permitted.
Prohibited Equipment
Open-frame, construction-style, or other high-noise generators typically producing 70–85 dBA at 23 feet are not allowed.
Justification
- Noise Impact Open-frame generators are commonly 15–25 decibels louder than modern inverter generators. Because decibels are logarithmic, a 10 dB increase is generally perceived as approximately twice as loud. As a result, open-frame units can sound two to four times louder to neighboring campers.
- Campground Acoustics Campgrounds are natural, shared environments where ambient evening sound levels are often below 40 dBA. A 75–80 dBA generator carries long distances, disrupts wildlife, and intrudes into multiple campsites simultaneously.
- Fixed High RPM Operation Open-frame generators typically run at constant high engine speed regardless of load, maintaining elevated noise levels even when powering minimal equipment. Inverter generators automatically throttle down under light load, significantly reducing noise and fuel consumption.
- Visitor Experience Many guests choose campground settings specifically for quiet recreation, conversation, wildlife observation, and rest. Excessive mechanical noise undermines this shared expectation.
Enforcement
Camp hosts and staff may require any generator exceeding the 60 dBA standard at 23 feet to be shut down immediately. Continued non-compliance may result in eviction without refund.
Thank you for helping us maintain a quiet, respectful camping environment for everyone.
